Dry lightning may spark Northern California fires today, tomorrow

Lightning in Northern California is expected to increase fire danger today and tomorrow.

Cal Fire has increased its staffing due to dry lightning and strong winds throughout much of Northern California, according to information released today.

A low pressure system along the coast is bringing subtropical moisture to the area, which is causing isolated thunderstorms across Northern and Central California. Many of the thunderstorms have little to no rain with them. Dry lightning has already sparked more than a dozen fires over the Sierras and northeastern California, according to a press release.

Ahead of today's predicted dry lightning storms, Cal Fire staffed its reserve fire engines, made additional inmate fire crews available and held all personnel on duty. Cal Fire urges Californians to remain fire safe and help prevent new fires.

A few helpful reminders and safety tips from Cal Fire include:

* Mowing or weed eating should be done before 10 a.m. (and never during extremely dry or windy conditions).

* Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation.

* Ensure campfires are permitted and, if so, be sure to extinguish them completely when done.

* Never pull your vehicle over in tall dry grass.
