What were the cheapest and most expensive consoles in gaming ...

Nintendo?s decision to price the Wii U at $300 (and $350 for a version with more storage) raised some alarm bells among price-conscious consumers, who noted that the Wii debuted at just $250 in 2006.

That made us wonder which console was the best bargain ? and which was the worst bargain ? in all of video game history at the time of launch. Fortunately for us, the folks at Statista like doing math. They calculated the launch prices for video game consoles throughout history, and then they adjusted the price for 2012 dollars based on inflation rates. And here are the results. The Neo Geo turns out to be the most ridiculously priced system at the time of its launch, coming out in 1990 at $650, which is $1,146 in today?s dollars. 3DO, which debuted in 1993, was close behind at the outlandish $699 price, or $1,114 in today?s dollars. The cheapest console was the Nintendo GameCube, priced at $199 (or $259 in today?s dollars) back in 2001.

Sure, we know that adding bigger storage and more accessories will make some of these systems priced below more expensive, but we?re measuring the base system cost.

By comparison, the Nintendo Wii U is coming out at $300 on Nov. 18. That price will make it the fifth most-reasonably priced console in video game history. Here?s a link to Statista?s research on game consoles.

Spain debt rises on aid to banks, regions

Sat Sep 29, 2012 1:08pm EDT

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's debt level and borrowing needs are set to rise next year, piling pressure on the government to apply for international aid, as it pours funds in to cash-strapped regions and an ailing banking system, its budget showed on Saturday.

Spain's debt as a ratio of gross domestic product will reach 90.5 percent by end 2013, according to the document presented to Parliament for approval, almost three times that registered before the property bubble burst in 2008.

The budget aims to make savings of around 13 billion euros ($16.72 billion) next year by cutting spending by the public ministries, education, health and infrastructure investments and freezing public workers' wages.

"This is an austerity budget, but will serve to help us get over this long economic crisis and once again show that Spain is a trustworthy partner within Europe," Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro told journalists after delivering the budget.

Spain is at the center of the euro zone debt crisis as nervous investors demand ever higher premiums to hold Spanish debt on concerns the government cannot control its finances in the midst of a deepening recession.

Calls by wealthy northeastern region Catalonia for independence and the rising number of demonstrations on the streets of major cities have fuelled doubts Spain can fix its problems without help.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has delayed any plea for aid, which would kick-start a European Central Bank plan to buy debt and ease financing costs, though this week has passed reforms and the budget plan in what many see is an effort to pre-empt the likely terms of a bailout.

Rajoy, who said he is considering the conditions behind any aid request, is widely expected to wait until after regional elections in Galicia and the Basque Country before taking any decision.

RISING BORROWING NEEDS

The budget details spending cuts of 3.1 percent in health, 14.4 percent in education and 6.3 percent in unemployment benefits, as the recession, which began in the first quarter, drags on.

Spain will also slash state funding to commerce, tourism and small, and medium-sized companies by 18.8 percent and infrastructure by 13.5 percent.

The government will increase its reliance on international markets for funding next year, with gross debt issuance requirements of 207.2 billion euros after budgeting in 2012 for gross issuance of 186.1 billion euros.

The cost of financing its debt, as benchmark 10-year bond yields rise to above 6 percent, is expected to increase to 38.6 billion euros, or 3.6 percent of GDP, in 2013, the budget showed.

The Treasury must pay debt redemptions of 159.2 billion euros in 2013, up slightly from 153.2 billion euros in 2012.

The increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio was due to a greater debt on the back of the economic crisis and the effect of state instruments on public accounts, the Treasury said in the document.

The instruments include the power deficit bond program, FADE, the service provider fund for regional governments, Spain's part in aid granted to Ireland, Greece and Portugal and the recapitalization loan for the country's banks, it said.

Brussels on Thursday said the budget was a large step in the right direction. But many economists expressed doubt that Spain's conservatives would be able to raise the cash the budget demanded as pension and debt-servicing costs rise.

"My general view is that this is an optimistic budget, in the sense that predictions for the contraction in 2013 are very optimistic," said Xavier Vives, economist at business school IESE, adding that he expected the plans to be revised as with every other budget over the last four years.

The budget is based on the assumption that GDP will shrink by 0.5 percent in 2013 year on year, though most economists expect a deeper slump.

DEFICIT JUMP

Spain will meet its 2012 public deficit target as dictated by European guidelines, Montoro said, but the shortfall will jump by more than one percentage point if aid to its struggling banks were taken in to account.

The Spanish deficit this year would be 6.3 percent of GDP, not including these payments to its banks, he said, but would rise to 9.4 percent of GDP last year and 7.4 percent of GDP this year if the aid was considered.

"Everything within the deficit derived from financial operations aren't included ... they're considered one-offs," Montoro said.

Spain has asked for up to 100 billion euros for its crisis-hit banks, though the debate among Spain's European partners rages over whether that money would go directly to its lenders or first via public coffers.

On Friday, an independent report showed Spanish banks will need up to 59.3 billion euros in extra capital to ride out the economic downturn.

The budget details on Saturday showed Spain's debt ratio included 30 billion euros of the planned 100-billion-euro aid request for the country's banks.

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in SF

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Nobel Peace Laureate and Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was in San Francisco, where she received an honorary doctorate from the University of San Francisco during her landmark visit to the U.S.

Most of the nearly 5,000 seats at the university's War Memorial Gymnasium were filled Saturday morning as Suu Kyi was presented with the framed degree by House Minority Leader and San Francisco Democrat Nancy Pelosi, and given a key to the city by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.

Suu Kyi spoke to the crowd in English for several minutes before switching to Burmese. She also answered written questions from the audience.

While she spoke she urged factions in the Southeast Asian nation, also known as Burma, to consider what they have or haven't done to promote peace.

Suu Kyi's appearance at the university is part of her high-profile visit to the U.S. that has included a private meeting with President Barack Obama and standing ovations at awards ceremonies in Washington and New York, including at the United Nations.

"USF is honored to serve as the home for this event working in partnership with the San Francisco Bay Area Burmese community to shine a ray of light on Burma at this pivotal moment in its history," said USF President Stephen Privett.

Suu Kyi, 67, has been a key player in Myanmar's political transformation after a half-century of military rule.

Until November of 2010 she had spent about 15 years under house arrest during the former military regime. Now she heads the main opposition group with 43 seats in parliament, which is dominated by allies of the former regime.

Still, her presence in parliament is huge step toward democracy. She has also been named head of a 15-member parliamentary committee tasked with helping to implement rule of law in the country. Her party had boycotted the November 2010 elections but took part in by-elections in April.

Dave Wiskus and Lex Friedman were kind and foolish enough to invite me to join them on their Mule Radio podcast, Unprofessional. We were bound by law not to discuss iPhones or iPads, which meant we kept trying to discuss iPhone and iPads using thinly veiled analogies to martial arts, movies, TV shows, and comic books.

It's short, bitter, Bane-ish, profane, and totally unprofessional. Check it out.

Facebook Gifts swaps virtual trinkets for real life goods

Facebook Gifts swaps virtual trinkets for real life goods

Remember the Facebook Gift Shop, that place where you could pick up virtual Troll dolls and send them to your friends? Well, it died. But, a phoenix has arisen from its ashes -- Facebook Gifts -- which will allow you to send real Troll dolls to your friends. You'll be able to order gifts for people directly through the social network and suggestions to pick up a little something will be tied into birthday reminders and life events like weddings. The new initiative is the result of its decision to purchase Karma, a social "gifting" app, in May. Over a 100 retailers have signed up for the launch, including Starbucks, and Facebook obviously will be taking a small cut of each sale, which could be a huge source of monetization for the company, especially on the mobile front. Interestingly, friends can be notified before a gift is delivered and will be given a chance to tweak orders -- just in case you don't know your mom as well as you think you do. Gifts is rolling out slowly in select cities now and will expand in the coming weeks. Though, it also has a viral element since once you've been sent a gift you are also blessed with the ability to send gifts yourself. Check out the source links for more details.

Bankrupt dad who lavished a fortune on teen queen daughter is ...

Broke dad who lavished thousands on teen queen daughter is spared jailRex

A doting dad who showered his teenage daughter with thousands of pounds worth of luxuries has been spared jail after she begged a judge to free him.

Harby Panesar's company went bust after he lavished a fortune on daughter, Anysha, who is now 19, so she could live her teenage dreams.

He spent ?20,000 on a Super Sweet 16 birthday party where Tulisa performed, with a personal video from Hollywood star Nicole Kidman as part of a Moulin Rouge-themed party.

He bought his daughter a Gucci handbag for her birthday, along with a ?1,500 personalised mobile phone and a pair of ?400 sunglasses.

The 45-year-old then bankrolled her dream to be a top teenage model and beauty queen, and she went on to be crowned America's Perfect Teen, becoming the first international cover girl on SuperModels magazine.

But he got into so much debt, his finance business collapsed. He was warned by the courts not to set up another business ? but he defied the orders and was caught and sentenced to nine months in prison.

However, the Appeal Court released the father after Anysha wrote to the judge. Lord Justice Rix allowed the appeal at the Civil Appeal Court and suspended his sentence for two years.

The court was told that he is now 'far removed from his once luxurious life' - and is 'financially ruined and bankrupt.'

Lord Rix said: "The public interest will be sufficiently vindicated by suspending the term."

Panesar made his money through his insurance company Motorcare Warranties which has collapsed.

An investigation by the Financial Services Authority found that the company left a trail of victims whose motor insurance policies were worthless.

A bankruptcy hearing in the High Court banned Panesar from setting up a new business. But Panesar was found in contempt of court by launching up a new insurance company called Motorcare Warranties.

Panesar, 45, and his wife Caroline, 43, now face losing their luxury ?500,000 home and their six-acre estate in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Unconfirmed reports say every guest went home with sore eyes and a migraine.

At least balloons and cake made an appearance.

Finding Gainful Employment

Senior year means it?s time to apply to graduate school or start looking for work. Because I?m interested in getting a graduate degree in something other than engineering (business, law, communication, etc.) later on in my career, I?ll be focusing on finding an entry-level job. Luckily for me, there are a number of resources available for USC students looking for jobs or internships:

1. ConnectSC

Connect SC is a very useful tool where USC students can view companies that are hiring directly from USC. Companies will periodically list jobs and internships on ConnectSC and students can login to view the opportunities, submit resumes, and apply for positions. These companies will often hold their first round interviews directly on campus in the Career Center, which is quite convenient for the busy USC engineer!

2. Career Fairs

Each semester, USC holds both a University Wide Career Fair and a Viterbi Career Fair. The university career fair was held last week. I attended and spoke to companies like Price Waterhouse Cooper, Boeing, and GE. Next week, on the engineering quad, Viterbi will hold its own career fair inviting companies from a wide variety of engineering industries. This is a great opportunity for students to get an idea of the different opportunities for USC engineers and get experience talking to recruiters.

Engineering students lining up to talk to recruiters at the Viterbi Career Fair

3. Viterbi Career Conference and Networking Events

Viterbi also holds more intimate events where students can get one-on-one interactions with recruiters. The Viterbi Career Conference (which is happening tomorrow!) gives students an opportunity to polish interview and job search skills through a series of workshops. Afterwards, a dinner is held where students can socialize with recruiters and distribute resumes.

Additionally, each semester Viterbi puts on the Viterbi Industry Networking Event, or as I call it: ?speed dating? with recruiters. Students rotate through tables and have about five minutes to talk to a recruiter and hand out their resume. This is a great way to build interview skills and find out about internship opportunities.

Dinner at the Viterbi Career Conference

In my job search, I am making use of a combination of these opportunities because I am looking for jobs in a wide variety of fields. I will also be attending the Out for Undergraduate Business Conference in New York next week, which will be another opportunity to talk to recruiters!

Be sure to check out the VSA twitter hashtag #ViterbiCareers for tweets about jobs and internships!

Until next time,

Will

Chinese court upholds $2.4 million fine against Ai Weiwei

A Chinese court ruled that artist and dissident Ai Weiwei will have to pay a $2.4 million tax evasion fine. Many view the fine as a way of silencing Ai's criticisms of the government.?

By Reuters / September 26, 2012

Dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei answers a question during an interview at his studio in Beijing September 27. On Thursday Ai lost a second appeal against a huge tax evasion fine, a case that has badly tarnished China's human rights reputation.

A?Chinese court?upheld a $2.4 million tax evasion fine against?China's most famous dissident?Ai Weiwei?on Thursday, in a case that has badly tarnished the country's already poor human rights reputation.

"It's an extremely shameless court," Ai, whose 81-day detention last year sparked an international outcry, told reporters.

"It didn't respect the facts or give us a chance to defend ourselves; it has no regard for taxpayers' rights," he said, adding he did not know whether now he had to pay to entire fine though he suspected he did.

Ai, 55, had asked the?Chaoyang District Court?to overturn the city tax office's rejection of his appeal against the 15 million yuan ($2.38 million) tax evasion penalty imposed on the company he works for, Beijing Fake Cultural Development Ltd, which produces his art and designs.

"From the Fake tax case (we) can see that there's no fair justice in?China," Ai added.

The case is widely seen by activists as an attempt to muzzle the outspoken artist, who has repeatedly criticised the Chinese government for flouting the rule of law and the rights of citizens.

Courts, controlled by the ruling?Communist Party, rarely accept lawsuits filed by dissidents and appeals against official decisions are routinely dismissed.

The case comes on the heels of a score of other high-profile cases, including the fleeing to the?U.S. embassy?of blind, self-taught legal activist?Chen Guangcheng.

Government efforts to silence Ai have frequently backfired, as demonstrated by an outpouring of public sympathy - and cash - in response to the tax penalty.

About 30,000 people donated money to help Ai cover an 8.45 million yuan bond required to contest the tax charges. Many of Ai's supporters folded money into paper planes that were flown over the walls of his home.

Russian metals moguls settle RUSAL stake spat

LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian billionaires Oleg Deripaska and Michael Cherney reached an 11th-hour settlement in a dispute over a billion dollar slice of aluminium giant RUSAL, shortly before they were due to give evidence in a drawn-out London court case.

The case, which had been expected to run well into 2013, was due to dwell on allegations of broken promises, criminality and mob rule while shining a light on the murky carve-up of lucrative smelters in the 'wild east' of post-Soviet Siberia.

"Mr. Deripaska announces that Mr. Cherney's litigation in London against him has been terminated," a spokesperson for Deripaska said in a brief statement. "Neither party will be making any further comment in relation to the litigation or matters raised therein."

Cherney's team released a nearly identical statement.

Cherney, born in Ukraine, raised in Uzbekistan, Jewish by creed and living in Israel since leaving Russia in 1994, alleged that metals mogul Deripaska reneged on a deal to buy him out of their joint aluminium business, RUSAL.

Well-connected Deripaska, who controls RUSAL and is a survivor of President Vladimir Putin's crackdown on oligarchs who once wielded great political power, denied having had any such business relationship with Cherney. He alleged he was the victim of a protection racket Cherney helped orchestrate - an accusation Cherney denied.

Cherney, who in 2008 won the right to bring his case against Deripaska in London's respected courts - the venue of choice for the warring Russian wealthy - was due to be cross-examined next Tuesday via video-link from Israel. An outstanding arrest warrant relating to a separate money laundering investigation prevents him from travelling to London.

Lawyers were intrigued at the last-minute deal.

"The experience in most of these cases is that they do go to trial because no one is willing to back down," said Philippa Charles, a litigation partner at law firm Mayer Brown.

"So it's interesting that the level of publicity has perhaps focused the minds of both parties on whether or not it is actually worth having their dirty linen washed in public."

THE POWER OF METAL

The Russian aluminium industry, like much of Russia's raw materials sector, came under the control of a few powerful oligarchs during the huge selloff of state assets that followed the collapse of communism and of the Soviet Union in 1991. The brutality of the business rivalry over aluminium smelters gave birth to the term 'aluminium wars'.

Cherney's case against Deripaska had overtones of a recent battle between Russian oligarchs Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich, which in August helped ensure the concept of "krysha", or roof, is well understood in the English courts.

A "krysha", in Russian gangster parlance, can be either a figure who genuinely protects, in return for payment, the interests of a business in a sometimes brutal business world or it can refer to a racketeer extorting money by intimidation. The boundary between the two can, of course, be blurred.

The case, which began in July when both sides published opening statements and lawyers laid out the details of their arguments in front of Judge Andrew Smith, hinged in part on what was agreed in a London hotel 11 year ago.

Cherney and Deripaska agreed they met at the Lanesborough Hotel on a March morning in 2001, that they signed one document and that Deripaska handed Cherney $250 million (154.1 million pounds). Everything else, even exactly when they first met each other, was disputed.

Deripaska says he made the payment to terminate a krysha arrangement with Cherney, partly because his business was now powerful enough, and his security forces strong enough, to confront criminal gangs.

Cherney says he had orally agreed a 50/50 partnership with Deripaska in 1993, which lasted until March 2001. He alleges Deripaska then agreed at the Lanesborough meeting to pay him a preliminary $250 million for his aluminium interests held by Deripaska - and also agreed to buy him out of the remainder of his stake within a few years.

MOB RULE

RUSAL, the product of a slew of takeovers and mergers mainly in Siberia, where the hydro-electric power needed to fuel hungry smelters comes cheap, has emerged as Russia's only aluminium producer. Cherney alleged a 13.2 percent stake belongs to him.

Deripaska, a former physics student who started investing in aluminium assets in 1991 who has entertained top British politicians on his 70 million pound ($114 million) yacht, says he was forced into a "krysha" after being threatened by some of the country's most powerful criminal gangs in the mid-1990s.

Stories abound about such "protection" mobs attacking the wives and relatives of those who failed to do their bidding, launching fictitious criminal proceedings, violent takeovers of businesses or simply liquidating rivals and critics.

One gang at the centre of the court case was the feared Ismailovskaya mob, alleged to have been run by Anton Malevsky, a man Deripaska says was used by Cherney to extort money before the Afghan war veteran died in a parachuting accident in 2001.

Cherney, who has never been convicted of a crime, dismissed the claims against him as "scandalous".

Deripaska also faced allegations at proceedings in Israel, the United States and Russia that he was involved in bribery, threats and even murder as he built his fortune. In separate proceedings, Germany's Stuttgart Regional Court has also linked him to Ismailovskaya. He denied the accusations.

Google: Maps not waiting in wings for iPhone 5

22 hrs.

Google has made no move to provide Google Maps for the iPhone 5 after Apple?dropped the application in favor of a home-grown but controversial alternative, Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said.

Apple launched its own mapping service earlier this month when it began providing the highly anticipated update to its mobile software platform iOS 6 and started selling the iPhone 5.

But users have complained that Apple's new map service, based on Dutch navigation equipment and digital map maker TomTom's data, contains glaring geographical errors and lacks features that made Google Maps so popular.

"We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know?" Schmidt told a small group of reporters in Tokyo. "What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call."

Schmidt said Google and Apple were in constant communication "at all kinds of levels." But he said any decision on whether Google Maps would be accepted as an application in the Apple App Store would have to be made by Apple.

"We have not done anything yet," he said.

Google and Apple were close partners with the original iPhone in 2007 and its inclusion of YouTube and Google Maps. But the ties between the two have been strained by the rise of Google's Android mobile operating system, now the world's leading platform for smartphones.

Schmidt said he hoped Google would remain Apple's search partner on the iPhone but said that question was up to Apple.

"I'm not doing any predictions. We want them to be our partner. We welcome that. I'm not going to speculate at all what they're going to do. They can answer that question as they see fit," he said.

Google provides Android free of charge and allows developers to add applications on an open basis, betting that by cultivating a bigger pool of users ??now at over 500 million globally ??it can make more money by providing search functions and selling advertising.

"Apple is the exception, and the Android system is the common model, which is why our market share is so much higher," Schmidt said, adding that success was often ignored by the media, which he said was "obsessed with Apple's marketing events and Apple's branding."

"That's great for Apple but the numbers are on our side," he said.

At one point, Schmidt, who was in Japan to announce the launch of Google's Nexus tablet here, used the device to show off a new function of Google Maps.

The feature allows users to shift their view of an area by moving the device in the air without touching the screen, similar to the effect of looking around.

"Take that Apple," he said, adding quickly, "That was a joke by the way."

What does international dialogue really look like? - Global Health Hub

By UHC Forward

(Institute for Healthcare Improvement) ? At IHI, as part of my work on the Quality Track for the Joint Learning Network for Universal Health Coverage, I bridge connections and enable dialogue among physicians, policymakers, and researchers across the globe who are trying to tackle one of the most exciting and important challenges of our generation: providing universal health coverage to people of all income levels. Sounds sexy, huh? Last week, I put this grand idea to the test for our monthly JLN webinar series with colleagues in Asia and Africa. The topic: What indicators should you use to measure the quality of care? How do you know that your health system has improved
