Sony was praised as being the best Android smartphone company in terms of open sourcing its firmware to the deepest level, once again Sony never fails to impress. We?ll soon be seeing the Xperia Z running Kernel 3.6!
The Linux Kernel, the very core of Android is the fundamental part of any firmware whether it?s an official or custom rom. Most modern post-ICS devices run kernel 3.0.xx while others like the Nexus 4, Nexus 10, Xperia Z and others based on the Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 enjoy the much newer Kernel 3.4. So far we?ve never seen any device effectively running anything newer than Kernel 3.4, even for Samsung whose devices are still using an ancient Kernel 3.0.31 in virtually all their Exynos devices, that naturally includes the Galaxy S3 and Note 2.
Sony is doing a remarkable job, a while back it even open sourced it?s Alpha firmware and had previously contributed to AOSP while the Xperia S enjoyed a ?stock-like? experience. It will once again prove it?s engineering?prowess by being the first to provide an Android 4.2.2 upgrade with a brand new Kernel 3.6.
Y0u may be wandering, why is a new kernel version so important. Well to the end user it wouldn?t make a damn difference to the end user but it all comes down to the internal management of your device, the newer the kernel the better are the features, the more secure it is and the more efficiently it works. A clear example can be seen while comparing Kernel 2.6 (used in Gingerbread) and Kernel 3.x (used in ICS and above). The improvements not only concerns performance but also encompasses better management as well as refreshed APIs.
Android doesn?t fully use the proper mainline Kernel version due to it being a fork of the latter, that being said progress is being made to effectively make the transition from that old ?fork? to the mainline kernel with each release of Android. Android may not have Kernel 3.8 but Sony is leading the way by providing their very latest handset with Kernel 3.6, that should please developers. They?re even ahead of Google!
The Android 4.2.2 update for the Xperia Z is scheduled to be released sometime during the end of March.
