Zinc deficiency mechanism linked to aging, multiple diseases

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? A new study has outlined for the first time a biological mechanism by which zinc deficiency can develop with age, leading to a decline of the immune system and increased inflammation associated with many health problems, including cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disease and diabetes.

The research was done by scientists in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University and the OSU College of Public Health and Human Sciences. It suggests that it's especially important for elderly people to get adequate dietary intake of zinc, since they may need more of it at this life stage when their ability to absorb it is declining.

About 40 percent of elderly Americans and as many as two billion people around the world have diets that are deficient in this important, but often underappreciated micronutrient, experts say.

The study was published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, based on findings with laboratory animals. It found that zinc transporters were significantly dysregulated in old animals. They showed signs of zinc deficiency and had an enhanced inflammatory response even though their diet supposedly contained adequate amounts of zinc.

When the animals were given about 10 times their dietary requirement for zinc, the biomarkers of inflammation were restored to those of young animals.

"The elderly are the fastest growing population in the U.S. and are highly vulnerable to zinc deficiency," said Emily Ho, an LPI principal investigator. "They don't consume enough of this nutrient and don't absorb it very well."

"We've previously shown in both animal and human studies that zinc deficiency can cause DNA damage, and this new work shows how it can help lead to systemic inflammation," Ho said.

"Some inflammation is normal, a part of immune defense, wound healing and other functions," she said. "But in excess, it's been associated with almost every degenerative disease you can think of, including cancer and heart disease. It appears to be a significant factor in the diseases that most people die from."

As a result of this and what is now know about zinc absorption in the elderly, Ho said that she would recommend all senior citizens take a dietary supplement that includes the full RDA for zinc, which is 11 milligrams a day for men and 8 milligrams for women. Zinc can be obtained in the diet from seafood and meats, but it's more difficult to absorb from grains and vegetables -- a particular concern for vegetarians.

"We found that the mechanisms to transport zinc are disrupted by age-related epigenetic changes," said Carmen Wong, an OSU research associate and co-author of this study. "This can cause an increase in DNA methylation and histone modifications that are related to disease processes, especially cancer. Immune system cells are also particularly vulnerable to zinc deficiency."

Research at OSU and elsewhere has shown that zinc is essential to protect against oxidative stress and help repair DNA damage. In zinc deficiency, the risk of which has been shown to increase with age, the body's ability to repair genetic damage may be decreasing even as the amount of damage is going up.

Medical tests to determine zinc deficiency are rarely done, scientists say, and are not particularly accurate even if they are done. The best approach is to assure adequate intake of the nutrient through diet or supplements, they said, especially in the elderly.

Even though elderly people have less success in absorbing zinc, the official RDA for them is the same as in younger adults. That issue should be examined more closely, Ho said.

Levels of zinc intake above 40 milligrams per day should be avoided, researchers said, because at very high levels they can interfere with absorption of other necessary nutrients, including iron and copper.

These studies were supported by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies.

Russian nationalists want wedding shooters jailed

(AP) ? It was an unusual wedding escort even for Moscow's brash style: A red Ferrari led a motorcade in which guests fired celebratory shots from car windows as they sped down one of the city's main avenues near Red Square.

Sunday's parade drew an angry reaction from the Kremlin-controlled parliament, where senior lawmakers voiced outrage Monday after wedding guests from the province of Dagestan in Russia's North Caucasus walked away with $3 fines. Just one man was ordered to pay a $60 fine by police who stopped the motorcade just outside the Kremlin.

Video of the incident also prompted angry comments from ethnic Russians, who denounced the wedding traditions brought into the Russian capital from the volatile Caucasus. Some called for tougher punishment for such behavior.

In an apparent response to the public outcry, a Moscow judge handed out a 15-day jail sentence to one of the shooters, the Interfax news agency reported.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of Liberal Democratic Party, said Monday while it's "a sign of joy" for people from the Caucasus to shoot off guns in celebration, "here it's a sign of robbery, banditry." He suggested such incidents be punishable by up to two years in jail.

Sergei Zheleznyak of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party suggested that celebratory gunfire should land a 15-day jail sentence and substantial fines.

"Meager fines for hooliganism with the use of firearms are a mockery of law and common sense," he said.

Millions of mostly Muslim natives of Dagestan and other Caucasus provinces flooded into western Russia after the 1991 Soviet collapse. Some have formed ethnic gangs notorious for their cruelty, and many others have been involved in violent clashes with ethnic Russian nationalists and soccer fans.

Many Russians harbor anti-Caucasus sentiments, and even those who would not describe themselves as racist are resentful of the hefty subsidies sent to the Caucasus, particularly to Chechnya.

The money is designed to bring stability after two separatist wars in Chechnya, but the region remains deeply impoverished while provincial leaders and officials flaunt their wealth and are often seen driving expensive cars and throwing extravagant wedding parties.

A 19-year-old Chechen man was arrested for three days and fined $150 in 2010 after drunk-driving his SUV over the Grave of an Unknown Soldier just outside the Kremlin.

Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption lawyer and popular blogger who has helped organize a wave of massive anti-Kremlin protests, said the wedding guests got away with tiny fines because of their connections.

"This single episode completely changes our ideas about what hooliganism and anti-social behavior are," he commented in his blog Monday.

Kenny Rogers opens up about childhood, career in memoir

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Country music star Kenny Rogers offers a revealing look into his life and five-decade-long musical career in "Luck or Something Like It," his memoir that will be released on Tuesday.

From his humble beginnings in Depression-era Texas, the Grammy-winning singer paints a portrait of his road to success and how he became one of the world's best-selling musicians with more than 120 million albums sold worldwide.

Rogers, 74, whose hits include "Lady," "The Gambler," "We've Got Tonight" and "Lucille," spoke to Reuters about his childhood, his father's alcoholism and why he compares music to a mistress.

Q: In what ways do you think your challenging upbringing has helped shaped you?

A: "I think it made me more determined. One of the things I talk about in the book is the fine line between being driven and being selfish. I think there were times in my life I was so driven I became very selfish, and I'm not proud of that. I think it's a realization I came to when I was writing this book."

Q: You also share your father's struggles with alcoholism and its effect on you.

A: "I think that one of the real tragedies in my life is that I never really got to know why my dad drank. He was an alcoholic, but during that time, post-War World Two, a lot of people were unemployed and ended up drinking. He couldn't really support his family and I think it just broke him down. It breaks my heart that I didn't know that before he passed away."

"I never drank in my life. I saw it destroy him and saw it destroy other people I work with, so I made a conscious decision about this. Plus I didn't know if there was any predetermination for me as the son of an alcoholic to become addicted, so I just never tried it."

Q: What do you think your father, Floyd Rogers, would have thought about your book?

A: "I think he would appreciate the honesty, the candor and the fact that I don't take myself that seriously. But I don't think there is anything in that book that he would be offended by because it's the truth as I saw it, and that's really all you can do."

Q: How about your mom, your siblings?

A: "I don't think any of my brothers or sisters have read the book yet since it just came out. I'm going to make them buy it. I have to sell all the books I can."

"I think my mom would have loved it. When I was working on this project, I was told if they like the boy, they'll love the man. So we spent a lot of time talking about my childhood, how we didn't have a lot of money and how my mom kind of force-fed us religion. She was a true believer with lots of wisdom. When I once complained about going to church, she told me, 'You can never be more as an adult than what's put into you as a child.' She was amazingly astute for a person with a third grade education."

Q: You have said: "Music, at least for me, is like a mistress, and she's a difficult mistress for a wife to compete with." Can you elaborate?

A: "When I became driven and selfish I was so intent to follow my life that it cost me. I was gone so much from some of my marriages that there was a disconnect."

"And this may seem like an absurd statement, but every woman I married, I really loved when I married her. And I don't blame them for the marriage falling apart. I blame myself and my chosen field of music. That's why I say that music is a mistress, because you can't wait to get out there to it, and usually the mistress wins in a situation like that. That's kind of what happened to me. Hey, you can't say I'm afraid of commitment. I've been married five times."

Q: So is five times (married) the charm?

A: "Wanda and I have been together now for 20 years, been married 15 years. She's 28 years younger than me, and I say this from the bottom of my heart - she is my soul mate. She knows me better than anyone else has known me. She loves what I do and I'm not as insensitive to her needs as I may have been in the past."

Q: So who is the Lucille of your famous song?

A: "My mom, whose name is Lucille, got very upset because she thought (the song) was about her. So I told her it's not about her, because she had eight kids. But she was so angry because she thought I was putting her business on the street. Roger Bowling wrote the song, and whether he knew Lucille or not is hard to tell. It's a great story song, though."

Police say Lindsay Lohan harassed in NYC hotel

Kristina Bumphrey / AP file

By Shimon Prokupecz, WNBC

Updated 7:18 p.m. ET:?Lindsay Lohan told police she was assaulted in her Manhattan hotel room early Sunday morning by a man she met at a night club, police sources said.

According to law enforcement officials, Lohan told police she got into an argument with a 25-year-old man she brought to her room after meeting him 1 Oak in Chelsea.

The argument was allegedly over photos the man took of Lohan on his cell phone while they were in her 15th floor room at the W Hotel near Union Square with some of Lohan's friends.

Police have identified the man as Christian LaBella, of California.

Lohan told detectives that at around 4:30 a.m. she saw photos of her on LaBella's phone, confronted him about the them and took his phone. LaBella then threw her on the bed causing scratches on her hands, police sources said.

Lohan ran out of the room and down the stairs of the hotel, but at some point decided to head back upstairs to her room. ?When LaBella saw her again, Lohan told police he attacked her, choking her, throwing her to the ground, and climbing on top of her.

A friend Lohan's who was with her at the time was able to pull LaBella off her, and Lohan then pulled the fire alarm for help. LaBella took off down the stairs, but police arrived before he was able to leave the hotel and took him into custody.

Lohan refused medical attention and did not go to a hospital.

LaBella was initially charged Sunday afternoon with assault and harassment, but after further investigation police dropped the assault charge. LaBella has since filed a harassment complaint against Lohan.

According to his YouTube page, LaBella ran for president of his business fraternity at the University of San Diego and was a child actor. In police paperwork, LaBella listed his employer as Illinois Congressman John Shimkus.

?While no one from Congressman Shimkus? office has been contacted by Mr. LaBella following his arrest, he has been an employee in the Congressman?s Washington office," a spokesman for Rep. Shimkus said in a statement Sunday. "Obviously, the Congressman does not condone his actions. ?As this is a legal matter for Mr. LaBella, the Congressman nor his office will make further comment.?

The alleged assault comes as yet more drama for the "Liz & Dick" star.

Earlier this month, she was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident after allegedly clipping a pedestrian with a borrowed Porsche outside a Chelsea club in New York City.

And last Sunday she was rushed to a New York City emergency room for a respiratory problem. The actress suffered complications due to asthma.

Lohan also remains on probation for a 2011 case in which she pleaded no contest to taking a $2,500 necklace without permission from an L.A jewelry store. Lohan no longer has to report to a judge --she completed a counseling and morgue cleanup duty program -- but she could face jail time if she is charged with another crime.
